About This Webinar:
The legislative and policy responses of the NSW government to the growing problem of domestic violence in this state will be discussed, in particular during the COVID-19 pandemic. October 2020 will be Mental Health Month, and an exploration of the responses of the legal system in NSW to mental health as it affects both perpetrators and victims of domestic violence would also be of interest.

Panellist: The Hon Mark Speakman SC MP
Mark Speakman was first appointed Attorney General for NSW in January 2017, then reappointed on 2 April 2019, adding the portfolio of Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence.
The Attorney General is the head of the Stronger Communities Cluster, the area of government responsible for:
- administration and enforcement of the law;
- punishment and rehabilitation of offenders;
- emergency services;
- protection of NSW from the threat of terrorism;
- the care of at risk children and families and the disabled;
- multiculturalism, seniors and veterans; and
- sport.
As First Law Officer of the state, Mark oversees the administration of well in excess of 200 Acts of Parliament, the most of any minister in the NSW Government. Mark was the Minister for the Environment, Minister for Heritage and Assistant Minister for Planning from April 2015 to January 2017. He was previously Parliamentary Secretary for Treasury, Parliamentary Secretary for Tertiary Education and Skills and Chair of the Joint Committee on the Independent Commission Against Corruption.
Mark was elected as the Member for Cronulla in 2011 after a career at the commercial Bar. Mark was appointed Senior Counsel in 2004, having been called to the Bar in 1991. Mark began his legal career in 1983 as a solicitor, then partner, at law firm Blake Dawson Waldron (now Ashurst).
He holds a Masters in Laws from Cambridge University and degrees in law and economics at Sydney University. Mark attended Caringbah High School in the heart of the electorate he now represents and where he spent his childhood and most of his adult life.
Panellist: Pauline Wright
Pauline Wright is a Partner Principal of P J Donnellan & Co Solicitors in Gosford. She was the President of the NSW Council for Civil Liberties from 2018 to 2019, having been Vice President since 1998, and has been active particularly in the areas of criminal justice, anti-terrorism and asylum-seeker policy.
Ms Wright was President of the Law Society of NSW in 2017, having served on the Council of the Law Society of NSW since 1997. She also sits on a number of committees and working groups of the Law Council of Australia, including the Access to Justice Committee, Equal Opportunity Committee and the National Criminal Law Committee. She is also a keen ocean swimmer, surf lifesaver, singer, actor, theatre producer, director and writer.

Jamelle Wells is an ABC television and radio Newsreader and the Senior Court Reporter for New South Wales. She works across television, radio and online. Jamelle has covered some of Australia’s highest profile cases including the ICAC inquiries into former NSW Labor Government Ministers, the Gordon Wood, Keli Lane and Jeffrey Gilham murder trials, Australia’s longest running terrorism trial and the church sex abuse inquiries. She has also covered cases involving billionaire Gina Rinehart and the trial of singer Leonard Cohen’s former partner Keli Lynch in Los Angeles. Before Jamelle joined the ABC in 2002 she was a Newsreader for stations including 2GB and 2WS and the editor of My Business Success magazine. She is author of The Court Reporter, ABC Books.
