Join us on Tuesday, 5 March for another Affinity Law Panel with Prof. Colin Picker, Dean, School of Law at the University of Wollongong and Prof. George Williams, Dean, School of Law at the University of NSW as they talk about Globalising Australian Law Schools. The panel will be facilitated by E/Prof. Ron McCallum from The University of Sydney. Light lunch will be served at 12:00pm. The talk will begin at 12:30pm.
About the speakers:
Prof. Colin Picker | Dean, School of Law at the University of Wollongong
Professor Colin Picker (A.B. Bowdoin, JD Yale, PhD UNSW) joined the University of Wollongong in 2017 as Dean of Law, to which he added the position Pro Vice-Chancellor (South Western Sydney) in July 2018. From 2010-2017 he was at UNSW Law where he was Director (and founder) of the China International Business and Economic Law (CIBEL) initiative as well as Associate Dean (International). Prior to joining UNSW he was the Daniel L. Brenner/UMKC Scholar & Professor of Law at the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law. He entered academia in 2000, after practicing in the DC law firm Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering. He was a founder and the first executive Vice-President of the Society of International Economic Law. He has published widely in the areas of IEL, International Law and Comparative Law. His more numerous publications have appeared in leading publishers and journals around the world.
Prof. George Williams | Dean, School of Law at the University of NSW
George Williams AO is the Dean, the Anthony Mason Professor, and a Scientia Professor at UNSW Law. He has written and edited books including Australian Constitutional Law and Theory, The Oxford Companion to the High Court of Australia and Human Rights under the Australian Constitution. He has appeared as a barrister in the High Court in many cases over the past two decades, including on freedom of speech, freedom from racial discrimination and the rule of law.
George is a well-known media commentator on legal issues. He has been a columnist for the Sydney Morning Herald and Canberra Times and an on-air analyst for ABC Television. He is currently a columnist for The Australian.

E/Prof. Ron McCallum | The University of Sydney
Emeritus Professor Ron McCallum AO studied law at Monash University, graduating in 1972. After teaching at Monash for eighteen years, he moved to Sydney in 1993 where he was appointed to a full professorship at the University of Sydney. Blind since his birth, this appointment made Ron the first totally blind person to be appointed to a full professorship at any Australian or New Zealand university. He served as Dean of the University of Sydney Law School between 2002 and 2007. In January 2011, on his retirement, the Senate of the University of Sydney awarded Ron the title of Emeritus Professor. His expertise in labour law and occupational health and safety saw him appointed as chair or member of various federal and state inquiries.
Professor McCallum was made an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) in 2006 for his services to tertiary education, for industrial relations advice to governments, for assistance to visually impaired persons and for social justice. In January 2011, Prime Minister Ms Julia Gillard designated Ron as Senior Australian of the Year for 2011. Professor McCallum was nominated by the Australian government to stand as an independent expert for the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities when that Committee was first established in 2008. The primary function of the Committee is to monitor the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Ron served as the inaugural member, then Chair of this Committee and then as a Vice-Chair until the conclusion of his mandate on 31 December 2014. He also served as the Chair of the UN Committee of the Chairs of all of the UN Treaty Bodies in 2011-2012.
