Young women leaders in the 21st century is a phenomenal challenge to the centuries-long status quo and perception of how we think the world should move forward. The need for a stronger, more holistic, and well-rounded representation of the beautiful and multicultural world we live in today plays an important role in paving the way for future leaders and existing communities to motivate, inspire and support their youth.
Young women in leadership roles create effective change that facilitates real opportunities demonstrated by their confidence, courage, and empathy. They are the role models for young people who execute effective leadership, with the community at heart. These inspiring women in different leadership roles have clearly demonstrated that change does not have a name, a face, or an address. It comes from everywhere and lies within you.

About the Speakers
Charishma Kaliyanda
Charishma Kaliyanda is an elected councillor for Liverpool City Council and a registered Occupational Therapist. She is currently the Community Engagement Officer for headspace Campbelltown, working to build awareness of and reduce stigma around mental health and well-being so that young people can access the help they need. Charishma was raised in Liverpool after migrating to the area with her family as a young girl. Charishma is a champion for diversity in sport, as a Multicultural Ambassador for Hockey NSW (and a keen footballer!). She has been a guest speaker and panellist for Arup, Y Vote, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and the Western Sydney Community Forum. She was named one of Australia’s rising political stars by Marie Claire, and twice nominated as a candidate for NSW Parliament before she turned 30. Although Charishma is proud to be one of 11 women elected to Council in Liverpool’s 145-year history, and one of the youngest, she wants to ensure that many, many more women are elected in the next 145 years! Charishma has put mental health and youth infrastructure on the agenda for Australia’s fast growing outer urban areas as a Strategic Advisory Committee member of the National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA).
Dilpreet Kaur Taggar
Born & raised in different parts of India, Dilpreet’s Punjabi heart is a staunch feminist. Her work revolves around racial, gender & political affairs. In 2020, she founded South Asian Today, Australia’s first media organisation for South Asian women and non-binary peoples with an aim to ensure South Asians remain in charge of their own narratives and lead the conversation around their identity, lived experiences and politics.
Lucy Stronach
Lucy Stronach is the current Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations. She is a current student at the University of Western Australia, finalising her dissertation as part of her Law and Society Honours. Lucy has had many years of practical experience in the field of crime and justice, particularly with the Parliament of Western Australia, Western Australian Police Force, and the Department of Corrective Services. Her work has taken her to the streets of Mumbai to fight for the empowerment of sex workers, to juvenile prisons in San Diego to assist with literacy skills in young offenders, and to the UNDP in Bangkok to work with youth leaders in the promotion of human rights and justice.
Kehkashan Basu
Winner of the 2016 International Children’s Peace Prize, 20-year-old Kehkashan Basu is an iconic youth leader, global influencer, environmentalist, champion of women and children’s rights, TEDx speaker, Climate Reality Mentor, author, musician, peace and sustainability campaigner. A Forbes30under 30 for Education and the first-ever Voices Youth Gorbachev-Schultz Legacy Award for her work on nuclear disarmament, Kehkashan is a United Nations Human Rights Champion, a National Geographic Young Explorer, a UN Habitat Young City Champion and the youngest ever Global Coordinator for the UN Environment Program’s Major Group for Children & Youth and one of Canada’s Top25 Women of Influence. Kehkashan is the Founder President of global social innovation enterprise Green Hope Foundation, that works at a grassroots level in 16 countries, empowering young people, especially those from vulnerable communities, in the sustainable development process and she has spoken at over 200 United Nations and other global fora across 25 countries. She is a member of the World Humanitarian Forum Youth Council and UN Women’s Action Coalition on Feminist Action for Climate Justice and has tirelessly worked to amplify the voices of young people, especially women and girls, in decision-making processes.
Moneeza Burney
Moneeza Burney has been associated with several development sector projects in Pakistan while working as a researcher, script writer, a freelance journalist, and leading youth programs of her own. Since 2014, Moneeza has served as a Director of the Lahore Students Union (LSU), a platform for youth community service and social leadership. She launched a program in 2014 called the Community Service Initiative which has placed over 1,000 students across a network of 75+ partner NGOs, social projects and civil society initiatives that has supported over 15 youth social initiatives. The program has received international recognition and awards. Moneeza has also been writing for DAWN newspaper as a feature writer since 2013. Currently, she is working as a Communication and Design Lead at the Mahbub Ul Haq Research Center and Saida waheed Gender Initiative, two research centers based at the Lahore University of Management and Sciences (LUMS).
